Venous Closure

Chronic venous insufficiency is very common in the United States. Statistics show that over 30 million people in this country suffer from this condition.

While less than 0.015% get treatment…

Most people are not aware that vein disease is very treatable, especially with the ClosureFast® system.

What is the ClosureFast® Procedure?

Equipment Used For ClosureFast Radiofrequency

ClosureFast® is a medical procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to treat chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins. This particular Closure treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that doctors use for precise, targeted treatment.

When your veins or the valves in your veins can’t work correctly as they should, the treatment that makes the most sense is re-routing the blood flow. The ClosureFast® procedure involves using radiofrequency to collapse affected veins and redirect blood flow.

The procedure begins when a vascular surgeon or vein specialist inserts the ClosureFast catheter into the affected vein. Usually, the catheter is inserted through a tiny incision made right below the knee for easy access.

Venous Closure Procedure

Using an ultrasound machine to guide them, the doctor will then heat the vein in 7-cm segments for about 20 seconds each. This may vary, depending on each case.

The catheter delivers heat to the affected area, which contracts the collagen in the vein’s walls. This causes your veins to collapse and close, allowing blood to be naturally redirected to healthy veins.

Over time, the collapsed vein becomes fibrous and gets absorbed into the surrounding tissue.

What Is It Used For?

ClosureFast® is a treatment widely used to treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins develop when the one-way valves stop working efficiently. This disturbs the blood flow, preventing it from flowing up to the heart.

Varicose Vein Leg Swelling

As a result, blood starts pooling in the veins, causing them to become enlarged, swollen, and knotted. Since the veins are present near the surface of the skin, they can easily be seen protruding from the skin.

While varicose veins usually affect veins in the legs, they can develop on other body parts as well.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

CVI happens when the valves in the veins in your legs (sometimes arms) don’t work correctly. As a result, blood doesn’t flow back to the heart and pools in the vein.

Skin Changes on Leg

This increases the pressure on the walls of the veins, allowing blood to leak into the surrounding tissue.

What are the Benefits of ClosureFast®?

A clinical study researching the efficacy of ClosureFast revealed that the treatment produces positive results within six weeks after initial treatment. Even though results are similar to laser ablation, ClosureFast® provides the following benefits:

  • Minimal & dramatically reduce pain vs. painful laser treatments
  • Faster recovery time and little to no downtime
  • Minimal risks and complications
  • Quick procedure that can take 3- 60 minutes

Are there any Potential Risks Involved?

Usually, patients report minimal side effects or complications occurring as a direct result of treatment. However, like with any other medical treatment or procedure, some potential risks or complications exist with ClosureFast.

These may include:

  • Adjacent nerve injury
  • Hematoma
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Thrombosis
  • Infection
  • Skin burn or discoloration
  • Skin perforation

If you have any lingering concerns, make sure to let your doctor know. Since they are apprised of your medical history along with the current state of your vein disease, they’ll review any potential risks with you before your treatment.

How soon will the Symptoms Improve?

The time it takes for the ClosureFast® procedure to improve varies for every patient. On average, most patients see effective results within a week or two after following the procedure.

If you want to pursue any supplemental procedure for cosmetic reasons, you can consider sclerotherapy or micro-phlebectomy.

Since the procedure is minimally invasive, you can return to your healthy lifestyle within a few days after the treatment. However, your doctor might suggest that you refrain from strenuous activities like lifting heavy weight and that you follow a regular walking regimen.

What does Recovery look Like after ClosureFast?

ClosureFast® radiofrequency ablation, in most cases, is an outpatient procedure. This means that chances are you’ll be sent home once the process is complete and the doctor sees you fit to leave. You can expect a recovery period of one to two weeks.

After the procedure, your doctor will recommend that you stay off your feet for the remainder of the day. This will allow the anesthesia to wear off, even when it’s localized.

Most patients feel a slight burning or stinging feeling in their leg. However, the pain or discomfort is usually mild. In case it becomes bothersome, your doctor might prescribe you a mild painkiller like ibuprofen.

As far as caring for the treatment site is concerned, your doctor will explain it to you in detail. The general rule of thumb is to leave the dressing on for around 24 hours and keeping the site clean.

If you experience any unbearable pain or pressure or the incision bleeds persistently, consult your doctor/surgeon immediately. Even though it might not be something serious, it’s better that you seek professional advice.

The ClosureFast® procedure has coverage policies with major health insurance companies in the US. This means that the ClosureFast® system is covered by many insurance companies in part or full.

You can talk to your vascular surgeon or vain specialist and discuss your insurance coverage in detail.
